Sound & Tone
- Swamp ash has a reputation for being lively and even-handed tonally.
- Players often notice a slight dip in the midrange. This pushes the highs forward a bit and gives the wood its characteristic brightness without sounding harsh.
- Notes bloom quickly rather than swelling in slowly, and it holds sustain well for something this light.
- The wood doesn't add much coloration of its own so pickups and amp come through cleanly.
- Warm and clear twang.
Wood feel & Workability
- Swamp ash grows in wetland conditions, resulting in an open grain and lighter wood. Great for extended play times.
- Considered one of the easier hardwoods to build with, great for first-time guitar kits.
- Shock resistant, very easily workable by hand or machine.
- Cuts and shapes cleanly with sharp tools, takes glue well, and bends nicely.
- This wood can be sensitive to humidity swings and will do better in stable shop conditions.
- Dust can irritate skin/lungs. Always use a mask.
