Product Overview

When you choose figured wood, you are creating a rare and special beauty, one with a grain only you will have.

What "figure" means-

"Figure" refers to the rare visual pattern created by natural growth irregularities or interlocked wood grain. In mahogany, this shows up as eye catching patterns with shimmering, wavy bands that shift in tone and light depending on the viewing angle.

Tone impact-

Figure is primarily a visual/aesthetic feature rather than a tonal one. A figured body and a plain grain body will sound very similar.

Warm, rich, and mellow. Mahogany emphasizes low-mids and lower frequencies rather than sparkling highs, giving a balanced tone with strong, crisp fundamentals. That said, figured wood can have more interlocked grain, which, though debated, some feel adds subtle tonal complexity or slightly more resistance to vibration transfer.

Wood feel & Workability

  • A favorite for first-time or hobbyist builders.
  • Cuts and shapes easily. Light-heavy density hardwood, forgiving for hand tools or machines.
  • Very stable. Resists warping and reacts less to temperature/humidity swings.
  • Smooth, straight grain with a warm reddish-brown color, prized aesthetically as well as sonically.
  • Sands fast and clean.
  • Glues, stains, and finishes well.
  • Very stable. Resists warping/shrinking during the build.
  • Straight grain, routed edges stay crisp.
  • Dense and heavy. Contributes to sustain but adds weight to the instrument.
  • Dust can irritate skin/lungs. Always use a mask.

Famous Players Associated with Mahogany Guitars
